How to Do Your Bit for Portland's Community

and Strengthen Unity

Suppose you’ve been around Portland for a while and now you feel compelled to do something for the greater good of your neighborhood because unity in a community is essential to you.      Courtesy of MI Portland Downtown, here’s precisely how you can do your bit for your town so that your friends and neighbors can benefit.

VOLUNTEER      Volunteering is a great way to make an impact on the world, whether you do it for a day, a week, or a year! In other words, donating your time, no matter how big or small, is something that won’t go unnoticed in your town. Moreover, volunteering does not usually require much of a financial commitment. You have to find a cause you’re passionate about and then get in touch with local companies that could use a helping hand.

DONATE      Besides donating your time, you could also do your bit by donating those items you no longer use. Moreover, if you have lots to donate and want to serve the less fortunate better, then, as Constant Contact notes, you could think of starting your own charity drive to give back to your community.

SPEAK UP      If you are someone who's not afraid to take a stand on something that's really important to you, then why not lend your voice to a cause that's close to your heart? What's more, you might find that you’ll inspire others to speak up and take action regarding things that bother them so that you create a ripple effect of positive change that is sure to impact your community for the better. If you're not the outspoken type, then there are other ways you can stand up for a cause, such as through social media, for example.

BUY LOCAL    If supporting your community through uplifting the economy is something you'd love to do, Formstack points out that you could always do your bit by supporting local businesses where you can. For example, if you can shop locally rather than buy from companies outside your district then this is probably preferable, especially if there are small businesses in the area that are just starting to find their footing who would probably greatly appreciate the added support.

CREATE A NONPROFIT      Suppose you envision starting a non-profit corporation to aid in generating awareness for a specific sector within your community. A non-profit could be a great way to put the spotlight on an area of your community that needs it. However, you'll most likely need to demonstrate a certain amount of transparency regarding how your finances are dealt with. For example, choosing the right accounting software could help you manage your nonprofit's finances more effectively by allowing you to track invoices, donations, and bookkeeping transactions more efficiently. Moreover, it should enable you to extract reports by category too so that you have a better idea of what's coming in and from where.
